PARISH NOTICES - 20/21 July 2019

For those who have died: We remember in our prayers, Mary Frettingham and Joseph Blahyj who have died recently.  Mary’s funeral arrangements are as follows; Reception into Our Lady and St Edward church on Sunday 28th July at 5.30pm and funeral Mass on Monday 29th July at 10am.  Joseph’s funeral will take place at Gedling Crematorium on Wednesday 24th July at 11.30am. Please keep their families in your prayers.

Dedicate a New Hymn Book: Many thanks to those of you who have dedicated one of our new hymn books either in memory of a loved one, for someone special to you, or as a dedication for your family. There are envelopes available at the back of church for you to dedicate a hymn book. Fill in the details and return it to us with a donation of just £10 by the end of July and we’ll do the rest. The name/s you want the book to be dedicated to, will be put on the inside cover of the hymn book.

Clustering of our local parishes: All are welcome and warmly invited to an open meeting at The Friary on Monday 22nd July at 7pm. It is an opportunity to look at the proposal put forward by the deanery, for clustering our parishes. The proposal is that Our Lady and St Edward church, Sacred Heart Carlton and St Augustine’s Woodborough Road will be clustered together with two priests looking after the 3 parishes (4 churches). Inevitably this will bring with it a re-ordering of Masses in this area and a reduction in the amount of Masses that can be provided each week. Come along, share your thoughts and opinions and see how the future of our parishes will look.

‘I belong’ books: The children’s ‘I belong’ books from this year’s First Communion Programme are ready for collection from the Friary or school. Parents, you should have already received the photos taken at the first communion celebrations. If you did not receive the photos, please give us an email address and we will ensure the photos are sent to you.

SVP Holiday Camp: The SVP Holiday Camp takes place at St Vincent Camp Site Mablethorpe from Saturday 3rd – Saturday 10th August. The cost of the camp is £70 including bus fare and there are 10 places left. Please contact Dom Merrison on 01332 573553 or 07811 378417 for further information.

First Communion Catechists: We are already preparing a programme for next year’s First Communion Children, and we are looking for anyone who would be prepared to help as a catechist for the children from January through to June. Training will be given. Please have a word with one of the priests if you are willing to help. Perhaps some of the parents from last year’s first communion programme might be able to help?

Parish Finance Meeting: There will be a Finance meeting on Monday 22nd July at the Friary beginning at 8pm.

LIVING SIMPLY  During the summer, many people have time for a holiday. Why not set aside a few minutes of your holiday to think about how you are living simply? For example, identify who are the five most important people you love in your life and the five most important things you love in your life. Now identify what you need to get rid of (things or activities) that prevent you spending more time with the people you love and the things you love in your life. In other words, get rid of the clutter which is preventing you living a fulfilled life. Simplify your life so that you can simply live!

The next Live Simply parish meeting is on Tuesday 23rd July in The Old Friary.

Full School and Leavers Mass: There will be an end of year Full School Mass in Church on Tuesday 23rd July at 1.30pm. It will be an opportunity to say farewell and good luck to our Year 6 children who move on from their primary to secondary education. A big thank you to all the staff and governors who have worked so hard during the year to create a fabulous teaching and learning environment for our children. All of you - staff and children, deserve a wonderful break! Enjoy yourselves wherever you are, stay safe and we will see you in September.

Xaverian Missionaries: The Xaverian Missionaries will be making an appeal at all Masses on the weekend of 3rd/4th August. More information will be given nearer the time.

Baptism: Congratulations to Bridget, Esther, Christopher and Godwin Ihunde who will be baptized at Our Lady and St Edward church on Saturday 27th July at 12 noon. Our prayers and best wishes go to all the family on their very special day.

Gift Aid, Standing Orders and Legacies: Please consider your financial contribution to the parish. There are all sorts of ways to contribute to the upkeep of the church – If you are a taxpayer you can ‘gift-aid’ your contribution which means we can claim back from the government 25p for every £1 you give at no extra cost to you. To do this you will need to contribute via the planned giving envelope scheme or through standing order which is the easiest way to contribute. We can provide information and there are leaflets from the finance office of the diocese, always available at the back of church.

If you would like to leave a legacy in your will so that a lump sum can be received for the purposes of the church after you have died, correct wording is available in the leaflet. We have recently received the very generous sum of £5000 as a legacy from of one of our deceased parishioners. Thank you to those who regularly support us.

Wednesday Word: Special copies of the ‘Wednesday Word’ are available from church for the summer vacation. Please take a copy home and help the children to prepare for the gospel readings at mass during the holiday period.
